Carrara

It borders south Versilia (province of Lucca), east Garfagnana, north Reggio Emilia and Parma and northwest La Spezia.

The city has been known since Roman times for the precious marble which is dug out of quarries in the Apuan Alps, a material so well-known that it has always been able to attract artists and illustrious men of every time and place.

Many villages perched on the mountain behind Carrara based their economy on agricultural activities and on sheep-farming, while others have grown marble quarrying.
